Technical guides, regulatory analysis and procurement intelligence for label converters, brand owners and co-packers.
One failed perforation on a tamper band is a product recall. Pharmaceutical converters cannot afford inconsistent film. Polimex supplies PETG validated for consistent tear propagation at 300–600 BPM.
In the EU, the Falsified Medicines Directive (FMD / Directive 2011/62/EU) requires tamper-evident features on most prescription medicines. In the US, FDA 21 CFR 211.132 mandates tamper-evident packaging for OTC products. Shrink sleeve neck bands with integrated perforation meet both requirements when specified correctly — and are accepted by major regulatory agencies as a primary tamper-evidence mechanism.
| Parameter | Pharma Recommendation | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Film grade | PETG 45–50 mic | Puncture resistance; consistent perforation tear propagation |
| Perforation type | Laser-cut single-line | Cleanest tear; no micro-tears between perforations |
| Perforation placement | ±0.5mm tolerance | Critical for high-speed automatic sleeving lines at 200+ BPM |
| Seam strength | Min. 350 g/cm pull | Prevents seal failure under transportation stress |
| Shrink onset temp. | 70–75°C (PETG steam) | Pharmaceutical glass bottles require gentle, uniform heat |
For OTC pharmaceutical products, a full-body sleeve with integrated perforation provides the highest consumer confidence signal — tamper evidence is impossible to overlook. For prescription medicines in smaller quantities, a standalone narrow neck band (20–30mm) may be preferred for cost reasons, though this requires a second application pass.
Pharma serialisation under EU FMD requires a 2D DataMatrix barcode on each individual pack. Polimex PETG films are printable with high-resolution rotogravure and digital inkjet — achieving module sizes down to 0.25mm in the DataMatrix code. Placement in the minimum-shrink zone of the sleeve ensures scan reliability after application.
