Traditional shrink sleeve printing requires cylinder sets costing €8,000–€25,000 per SKU and minimum runs of 50,000+ units. Digital printing on shrink sleeve film eliminates cylinder costs entirely — enabling runs from 500 units, new designs at the cost of press setup only, and multiple label variants within the same production run. Craft beer packaging competes on visual differentiation. Shrink sleeves give craft brands a 360° canvas — the full circumference of the can or bottle — for artwork that wraps seamlessly around the container. Tactile varnishes (matte, soft-touch, grit finish) differentiate craft labels from mainstream brands at point of contact as well as point of sale.
Digital short-run printing allows craft brands to release seasonal labels, collaboration artwork, and market-test designs without inventory risk. A 1,000-can limited edition run with a unique label design is commercially viable through digital printing on shrink film — the total label cost is a small fraction of the liquid cost, even at short run premiums.
