Shrink Sleeves have gained wide popularity due to their durability and dynamic design capabilities — 360° artwork, tamper evidence, flexibility across container shapes. Yet there has been ongoing debate around their recyclability. The biggest contributor to recyclability concerns is the substrate. PVC tends to hinder recyclability in mixed-stream processes, which is why producers including Polimex have switched to PETG — offering significant recyclability advantages at comparable performance.
Although PETG is more expensive than PVC, buyers are now prioritising recycling and sustainability over unit price. The process starts at production: brands need to ensure customers understand that labels on their products can be removed and recycled separately.
Social channels and QR codes are effective tools for educating consumers on correct recycling. Pernod Ricard, for example, has integrated QR codes into their packaging to display product information alongside recycling instructions. PepsiCo's senior principal engineer has publicly stated that shrink sleeves are an excellent alternative for beverage and food packaging for this very reason.
Shrink sleeves are not inherently unsustainable — the sustainability outcome depends on substrate selection and the effort put into consumer education. Many companies are also introducing zip-off labels to make sleeve removal simpler for the end user.
