For food and pharmaceutical products in the EU, tamper evidence is not a brand decision — it is a regulatory requirement. EU Directive 2019/904 and FDA 21 CFR requirements mandate that consumers can visually confirm packaging integrity before consumption. For shrink sleeves, this is implemented through one of three approaches: integrated perforated neck band, standalone safety seal, or full-body sleeve with perforation at defined break point.
The most widely used solution for beverages and food jars. The shrink sleeve extends over the cap and neck with a horizontal perforation line at the cap-to-body junction. When the cap is twisted, the perforated band tears cleanly — providing visible evidence of first opening. The entire label and band is a single piece of film, applied in one pass on the sleeving machine.
Advantages: One component, one pass application, no additional sleeving station required.
Limitations: Perforation placement is critical — ±1mm tolerance on high-speed lines. Film must have consistent tear propagation across the perforation width. Specify puncture-resistant single-wrap PETG at 45–50 mic for reliable perforation performance.
A narrow (20–40mm) separate shrink band applied only to the cap/neck area. Used when the body label is a PSL or when cap diameter change makes full-body integration impractical. Requires a dedicated narrow-band sleeving station.
Advantages: Independent of body label — allows label and seal to be different film grades.
Limitations: Two-pass application — additional machine, additional inventory SKU, higher cost per unit.
The full shrink sleeve runs base-to-cap with a perforated tear strip at the cap junction. Offers the maximum tamper-evidence visibility alongside 360° branding. Most complex to specify but delivers the strongest shelf impact and consumer confidence signal for pharmaceutical OTC products.
| Option | Line Speed | Cost | Regulatory Acceptance |
|---|---|---|---|
| Integrated neck band | High — 300–600 BPM | Low | Full — EU + FDA |
| Standalone seal | Medium — 100–250 BPM | Medium | Full — EU + FDA |
| Full-body + perforation | Medium — 150–350 BPM | Higher | Full — EU + FDA + premium tier |
Integrated perforated neck bands are the most cost-effective tamper-evidence solution at high line speeds. Full-body tamper-evident sleeves deliver maximum consumer confidence for pharma OTC. Polimex supplies puncture-resistant single-wrap PETG at 45–50 mic for all three options. Contact: ops@polimexgroup.com
