Shrink film does not shrink uniformly. A film specified at 60% maximum shrinkage will shrink differently at different heights of the same bottle — 60% at the waist, 15% at the widest cylindrical section, and varying amounts at the shoulder and base. Artwork that is not pre-compensated for this variable shrink profile will look stretched, compressed or warped in those zones.
Request a container drawing from your packaging engineer that shows diameter at every 10mm height increment. Convert each diameter to a circumference (π × d) and compare it to the maximum circumference — this gives you the local shrink ratio at each height. Record these as a "shrink map."
The pre-distortion is applied in the vertical axis only (machine direction shrinkage is typically <3% and can be ignored for most designs). In Adobe Illustrator, this means stretching the artwork vertically by the inverse of the shrink ratio at each zone. For a zone that will shrink 40%, stretch the artwork 1/(1-0.40) = 1.67× vertically in that zone before setting artwork to the flat film layout.

Place the primary logo in the minimum-shrink zone — typically the widest cylindrical section of the container. Brand names, barcodes, and legally required text should all sit in zones with <25% local shrink where possible. Decorative and pattern elements can tolerate higher shrink ratios.
3D sleeve simulation software (available from most pre-press houses and some converter RIP systems) can render the wrapped artwork on a 3D container model. This is the only reliable way to validate pre-distortion before committing to film production.
