Shrink sleeve labels are unique in their ability to conform to a container's shape when exposed to heat. Offering 360-degree coverage and vibrant graphics, they are ideal for beverages, food, personal care, and pharmaceuticals. At the core of these labels is the material used, which significantly influences performance, printability, and sustainability.
Low-density polyolefin (LDPO), a member of the polyolefin family, stands out as an innovative material for shrink sleeve labels. Its lower density, high clarity, and superior shrink characteristics provide distinct advantages over traditional materials like PVC, PETG, and OPS.
LDPO is a thermoplastic polymer derived from the polymerisation of ethylene and other alpha-olefins like butene or octene. The addition of comonomers introduces branching into the polymer chains, reducing crystallinity and density (0.910–0.930 g/cm³). Key properties include:
LDPO has a broad shrinkage temperature range of 70°C–120°C, compatible with steam tunnels and hot air ovens. Its low melting point facilitates efficient extrusion and film production.
LDPO resin is melted and extruded through a circular die. The film is inflated to achieve desired thickness and stretched to orient polymer chains for shrink properties.
LDPO is extruded through a flat die onto a chilled roller, then stretched and cooled for orientation.
The film is stretched in both machine and transverse directions, enhancing shrink ratio and mechanical strength while maintaining clarity.
LDPO films require surface treatment (corona or plasma) to increase surface energy for ink adhesion. Common printing techniques include Flexographic (high-volume), Rotogravure (intricate designs), and Digital (small runs, personalised packaging).
| Industry | Application |
|---|---|
| Beverages | Contoured bottles — juices, soft drinks, alcoholic beverages |
| Personal Care | Shampoos, lotions, cosmetics |
| Pharmaceuticals | Safe, legible labeling for medicines |
| Food Packaging | Ready-to-eat meals, condiments |
Unlike PVC, LDPO is easily reprocessable without significant quality loss. Its lightweight nature allows thinner films, reducing material usage, transportation weight, and environmental impact. When used with polyethylene (PE) containers, LDPO promotes mono-material packaging that simplifies recycling.
Shrinkage Consistency: Advanced orientation techniques mitigate irregular shrinkage on complex containers. Ink Compatibility: Surface treatments and optimised inks prevent smudging. Static Electricity: Ionising equipment resolves static build-up during printing. Cost: While LDPO can be costlier than PVC, recyclability and performance benefits often offset the difference.
Bio-based polyolefins from renewable sources, smart packaging integration (QR/NFC), enhanced coatings, regulatory alignment, and improved shrink control for more complex container shapes.
LDPO shrink sleeve labels combine superior recyclability, lightweight construction, and excellent shrink properties — ideal for beverages, pharma, and personal care. Polimex supplies PO shrink sleeve films globally. Contact: web@polimexgroup.com
