In PET bottle recycling, the core sorting step is a float-sink water bath: PET (density ~1.34 g/cm³) sinks, while labels must float to be separated. PETG has a density of 1.27 g/cm³ — it sinks along with the bottle, making separation in conventional recycling systems unreliable without wash-off technology.
Polyolefin shrink sleeve film (PO) has a density of 0.90–0.94 g/cm³ — it floats decisively. This is the fundamental recyclability advantage of polyolefin over standard PETG.
| Property | PETG | Polyolefin (PO) |
|---|---|---|
| Density (g/cm³) | 1.27 | 0.90–0.94 |
| Float-sink behaviour | Sinks — problematic without wash-off | Floats — separates cleanly |
| Max shrink ratio | 40–75% | 30–65% |
| Shrink onset temp. | 70–75°C | 90–110°C |
| Clarity | Excellent — crystal clear | Good — slight haze possible |
| Printability | Excellent — benchmark standard | Good — requires corona treatment |
| PPWR recyclability | Requires wash-off PETG grade | Compliant as standard |
| Cost per kg | Higher density = more kg per m² | Lower density = fewer kg per m² |
PO is the logical choice when the container is made of PE or PP — the label and container become mono-material, simplifying both application and recycling. It is also preferred for food applications where the low shrink onset temperature is advantageous, and for brands prioritising PPWR compliance without switching to wash-off PETG.
For containers requiring more than 60% shrink ratio — highly contoured bottles, multi-diameter profiles, small-neck spirits bottles — PETG remains the only film that consistently delivers. The answer for these applications is not to abandon PETG but to specify wash-off PETG with EPBP-tested inks.
Polyolefin shrink sleeve floats in recycling streams, making it PPWR-compliant without modification. PETG requires wash-off grade for compliance. For high-shrink applications, wash-off PETG is the answer. Polimex supplies both — bulk single-unit film pricing available. Contact: ops@polimexgroup.com
