From 2000–2009, a shift from rigid packaging (glass and metal) to flexible plastics and rigid PET was driven by consumer convenience. From 2010–2020, China became the largest packaging market, with sustainability and innovation playing a major role — alongside limited commercialisation of bio-based materials.
1. Sustainability at Core: Every company has now optimised carbon footprint and recyclable content. Business models are integrating refill and reuse programmes into core goals.
2. Digital: E-commerce has shifted consumers online. To win, brands must demonstrate that their product takes health, wellness and sustainability into account — communicated digitally and at point of sale.
3. New Growth Opportunities: E-commerce demand will keep surging. Businesses that maintain a strong web presence and keep customers informed through digital channels will strengthen their value chain position.
PLA: Made from sugars found in corn or sugarcane. Relatively inexpensive, with strong mechanical properties compared to other biodegradable polymers — popular in the label market. PLA shrink sleeves offer higher shrinkage at lower temperatures with excellent transparency.
PBAT: Petrochemically derived but biodegradable and environmentally friendly. Often blended with PLA for improved flexibility and processability.
Shifting toward PLA or PBAT delivers odour-free properties, heat barrier capabilities and a clear communication value — demonstrating your company's commitment to a sustainable future.
Using bio-based films adds a new communication dimension to your brand's core values. It shows commitment to sustainability, aligns with consumer trends, and keeps you ahead of regulatory changes progressively restricting conventional single-use plastics.
Packaging has shifted from rigid to flexible to bio-based. PLA and PBAT are key materials. Polimex supplies PLA shrink sleeves, LDPE stretch sleeves and PETG labels for sustainable packaging lines.
