The fast-growing development of polymers such as PHA, PLA and bio-based forms of polyamides and PP is expected to drive bioplastics production capacity significantly within the next five years. Only 40% of the world's bioplastics is currently produced in Asia — a share expected to grow to 60% by 2027.
1. Environmental Awareness: Consumers and retailers are actively moving away from conventional plastic bags and towards compostable alternatives to promote sustainability values.
2. Changes to Law: Governments across multiple countries are now banning single-use plastics and encouraging compostable alternatives as part of wider sustainability legislation.
3. Waste Reduction: Bioplastics help companies work toward their sustainable development goals by reducing the volume of non-degradable waste entering landfills and oceans.
Marketing bioplastics can be a challenge. Due to their complex nature, companies often over-promise, which leads to consumer disappointment. The first step is education — explain exactly what can be done with plant-based products and packaging. Applications include food containers, grocery bags, biodegradable utensils and food packages.
Although bioplastics have existed for over 100 years, they have only recently started to gain mainstream traction — driven by regulation, consumer awareness and cost improvements.
Bioplastics production capacity is rising globally, driven by legislation, consumer awareness and waste reduction goals. Polimex supplies PLA and bio-based shrink films. Contact: web@polimexgroup.com
