How to Calculate How Much Shrink Film You Need

The Basic Formula

Shrink sleeve film is ordered in kg by weight, but production is measured in labels. The bridge is: container dimensions → film width → m² per label → total m² → kg.

Step 1: Lay-Flat Width

Lay-flat width (mm) = (π × container diameter × 1.05) ÷ 2

Step 2: Area per Label

Area per label (m²) = (lay-flat width ÷ 1000) × (label height + 10mm) ÷ 1000

Step 3: Convert to kg

Weight (kg) = total m² × thickness (mic) × 0.000001 × density × 1000
PETG: 1.27 g/cm³ · OPS: 1.05 g/cm³ · LDPE: 0.93 g/cm³
