PLA (polylactic acid) shrink sleeve film is derived from corn starch or sugarcane. It is industrially compostable under EN 13432, carries a seedling logo recognisable to sustainability-focused consumers, and positions a brand's primary packaging as fully bio-based from cap to label. For organic food, craft beverage, and wellness brands, the marketing value is significant.
| Property | PLA Shrink Sleeve | PETG Benchmark |
|---|---|---|
| Max shrink ratio | 45–60% | 40–75% |
| Shrink onset temp. | 55–65°C | 70–75°C |
| Clarity | Excellent — better than PETG at low mic | Excellent |
| Humidity resistance | Limited — absorbs moisture over time | Excellent |
| Shelf life (sealed, 20°C) | 12–18 months on roll | 36+ months on roll |
| Hot-fill compatibility | No — deforms above 50°C | Yes — to 75°C |
| Cost premium vs. PETG | +20–40% per kg | Benchmark |
PLA performs best for ambient-temperature products with a fast retail turnover — craft beer, sparkling water, organic condiments, health supplements, and cosmetics. These applications keep the film within its thermal and humidity tolerance window. The critical specification requirement is that the fill line must not use hot-fill or steam pasteurisation at temperatures above 60°C.
EN 13432 certification confirms the film will disintegrate in an industrial composting facility within 12 weeks. It does not confirm home compostability — a stricter certification (OK compost HOME by TÜV Austria) requires separate testing. Brands must be precise about which claim they make, as regulators in the EU and UK are actively penalising greenwashing around compostability.
The 20–40% cost premium over PETG is real, but must be evaluated against the pricing power it enables. Consumer research consistently shows a 5–12% price premium is achievable on sustainably packaged products in premium retail. For craft and organic segments, PLA shrink sleeves are increasingly becoming a commercial advantage rather than a cost burden.
PLA compostable shrink sleeves are retail-ready for ambient, fast-turnover products. Not suitable for hot-fill or high-humidity environments. 20–40% cost premium vs. PETG. Polimex supplies PLA shrink film from trial roll. Contact: ops@polimexgroup.com
