Vacuum-sealed meat and cheese packaging has three demands that don't naturally align with current compostable film chemistry: puncture resistance against bone and irregular product edges, a genuinely low oxygen transmission rate to prevent oxidative spoilage and colour change, and reliable seal integrity under the mechanical stress of vacuum draw-down. Standard PA/PE vacuum pouch film (see our PA/PE Film material page) was engineered specifically around these three requirements, and it shows in the numbers: 8-12 cc/m²/day OTR standard, extending below 3 cc/m²/day with an EVOH layer, and puncture-resistant gauges up to 200 micron for bone-in cuts.

Compostable barrier structures for food packaging are advancing — typically multi-layer PBAT/PLA constructions with an added barrier layer (cellulose-based, or a compostable-compatible coating) to improve oxygen and moisture resistance beyond baseline PBAT/PLA performance. These structures are viable today for shorter-shelf-life, lower-puncture-risk applications: pre-sliced deli meat and cheese in retail-ready trays with a lower mechanical stress profile than bulk vacuum-sealed cuts, or products with a shorter intended shelf life where the barrier gap matters less. They are not, currently, a straightforward drop-in replacement for high-barrier, puncture-critical, extended-shelf-life vacuum packaging of bone-in or bulk fresh meat.
If your product is pre-sliced, boneless, and shorter shelf-life, it's worth a technical conversation about a compostable barrier structure — we'll be direct with you about the barrier and mechanical trade-offs against your specific shelf-life target before you commit to a production run. If your product is bone-in, bulk, or requires the barrier and puncture performance of extended cold-chain shelf life, standard PA/PE (with EVOH upgrade if barrier demands it) remains the technically appropriate specification today — claiming a compostable structure can match that performance profile currently would not be an honest recommendation on our part.
Compostable vacuum-seal structures exist for lower-risk applications (pre-sliced, boneless, shorter shelf life) but do not yet match standard PA/PE's barrier and puncture performance for bone-in or extended-shelf-life fresh meat and cheese. Match the material to your actual product risk profile — Polimex will give you the trade-offs directly rather than oversell a compostable structure that doesn't fit your application.
